What is heartworm?

Heartworm is a serious and fatal condition for dogs and cats even indoor cats caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, and blood vessels that supply blood to the lungs of infected animals. Pets can contract heartworm disease from mosquitoes that are infected with heartworm parasites. In Ontario, heartworm season starts in late March/April and ends in November/early December. During the last 3 months of  heartworm season (September to November) flea infestation is on the rise. The new heartworm medication also covers ticks that carry Lyme disease as well. Your dog needs an annual heartworm/tick test prior to starting heartworm preventive medication to make sure he or she is negative for heartworm. Puppies under 6 months of age are considered negative for heartworm and do not need the test.
